Overview of Service

Iridium LLC was the first hand-portable satellite system to be available for use on the commercial market. Using advanced LEO (Low Earth Orbiting) satellite technology, the 66 satellites offer the largest coverage footprint of any satellite communication network. Iridium therefore offers the closest reality to ‘global communications’. Iridium’s LEO satellites orbit at an altitude of 780 km. The satellites are connected to a group of corresponding network of ground stations. The satellites are substantially lower than Inmarsats 4 Geo-Static Orbiting (GEO) satellites and consequently have to be greater in number to cover a similar landmass. The advantage of having lower orbits include: less power to reach the satellite enables the network to offer more compact handsets & terminals; better call quality without significant delays; and greater reliability, since there is a large overlap between satellites.

Marine Satellite Telephone

The Iridium Marine Telephone system provides voice and data operation 3 -unit design. The Iridium system features a multi-unit Iridium configuration consisting of an intelligent Handset Control Unit, a Transceiver Unit and an Antenna Unit.

The intelligent handset with display and splash-proof keypad is used for controlling a black boxed Transceiver Unit and the remote Antenna Unit facilitating installation. This Iridium telephone offers both telephony and data transmission at 2,400 bit/s and a dedicated ‘Alert’ button to be used in critical situations (emergencies). The ‘Alert’ button is integrated in the Control Unit for dialling the nearest Iridium Gateway which will route the call to any RCC (Rescue Co-ordinating Centre) selected.

Now smaller, lighter and more resistant to water, dust and shock than Motorola's previous offering, the newest addition to the Iridium portfolio is ideal for industrial or rugged conditions, yet appealing to the travelling professional. Business, adventure, or pleasure, you can stay in touch across seas and time zones, in remote locations and on the go. One telephone number, through the use of a mini (SIM) card, can help keep you connected & at 158L x 62W x 59D mm, they don’t come more compact than this.
